In most cases you can use your fingers in the hole left by the lock to remove the lock s latch through the side of the door. In apartment complexes this is now the most common way of changing locks on a door. Insert a flatheaded screwdriver into the spindle housing hole. Remove the latch assembly doorknob.

Insert the exterior part of the lock into the door by feeding the long metal piece through the opening in the center of the bolt. Remove the two screws from the latch assembly on the side of the door. Position the lock mechanism such that the keyhole is vertically aligned. You may also need to use a wire tool or a paper clip.

Orient the turn assembly plate such that its top side is at the top. On the opposite side insert the bar into the channel in the back of the turn assembly plate. Once the new pins are in reverse the steps to reassemble the lock. Insert the new bolt into the opening on the edge of the door and fasten it to the door with the provided screws.

Insert another flathead screwdriver under the edges of the tabs holding the lock cylinder in place within the housing. Rekeying involves realigning the pins and springs in the inner workings of the lock in. Remove the screws from the old lock on the inside of the door. But sometimes this may not be possible.

If your new lock is the same brand and model as the old one you may be able to keep your existing latch plate and strike plate. Use a phillips head screwdriver to unfasten the two or three screws located on the inside knob plate. Remove the strike plate on the door jamb as well. When the screws are out both sides of the lock will simply slide off leaving only the latch in the door.
