Overlaps on the sides let you fine tune the cabinet width during installation.

If you are using euro hinges you will need a 1 2 overlay hinge with the ff adapter plate. I repeat this until the shims slip in snug. Frameless cabinets would be just the cabinet box and the hinge mounting plates then attach to the cabiinet side walls. All natural wood characteristics are acceptable on the inside edges.

The sample base and wall cabinets shown below have these features to make building them as simple as possible. Standard stile rail dimensions for face frames is 1 1 2. The doors are installed flush with the frame hence the term inset visually when you look at an inset kitchen you will see a frame around between the doors and drawers. Inset is my standard cabinet.

So when the doors overlay the face frame by 1 2 on each opening it also leaves a nice 1 2 gap between the doors and drawer fronts and allows you to see a fair amoun of. 3 4 thick solid wood face frames with 1 1 2 wide stiles and rails unless otherwise specified. Frames feature blind mortise and tenon joints. For the overlay doors i have been making all perimeter rails and stiles 1 3 4 inches and all middle stile and rails at 2 1 4 inches so i end up with 1 1 4 inch of all of the stiles and rails exposed with my 1 2 inch overlay doors.

The 3 4 plywood case eliminates panel jointing planing and glue ups. Inset cabinets are made with framed boxes each cabinet box has a 1 5 inch wide face frame. Face frames cover plywood edges. Build the face frame so that the bottom rail rails are horizontal boards and stiles are vertical boards projects 1 16 in.

I have three of the 5 64 shims so i can do pairs of doors. Center or divider rails typically measure 2. I use the edge sander to size the door. Custom frames are available in any wood specie.

Question in the past i have been building exclusively overlay face frame cabinets but lately i have been getting some inset door jobs. Please note that assembled face frames will have a size tolerance of 1mm on the overall sizes and 1mm within each opening. The face frames in the above picture are 1 1 2 wide. The bottom rail is almost always 1 1 4 to 1 1 2 inches in width. Assembled face frames are only grain and color matched on the faces.
